Students and employees who care for and look after relatives in need of care are supported by the family service and can take advantage of the family-friendly offers.

  • Support in emergencies and exceptional situations

    Fluxx emergency care (Fluxx-Notfallbetreuung) provides spontaneous and punctual support in the care and responsibility for elderly or ill relatives or partners when your regular daily support falls away unexpectedly. Fluxx ensures the daily structure of your relatives in need of support. This includes:

    • Help for independent living in the household, among other things with everyday tasks
    • Accompaniment outside the home, e.g. for walks, visits, doctor's appointments or shopping

    Employees and students of Leibniz Universität Hannover can get personal advice and help through Fluxx.

Information for employees

  • Leave of absence, time off work or part-time work (in TV-L)

    In addition to the general legal regulations, such as the Nursing Care Leave Act (German: Pflegezeitgesetz) or the Nursing Care Insurance Act (German: Pflegeversicherungsgesetz), there are also paragraphs in the collective agreement of the states (German: Tarifvertrag der Länder) that are relevant for employees with relatives in need of care:

    • Teilzeit: gemäß § 11 1.1 TV-L (Part-time: if, according to a medical certificate, a relative in need of care is to be cared for)
    • Arbeitsbefreiung: gem. § 29 I Nr. e) cc) TV-L (Exemption from work: in case of serious illness of a person living in the same household)
    • Sonderurlaub: gemäß § 28 TV-L (Special leave: important reason is given if the need for care of the relative is justified by a medical certificate)

  • Flexible working hours

    For employees of Leibniz Universität Hannover, there are many options for flexible working hours. In consultation with their respective superiors, they can work part-time. In particular, employees with family or care responsibilities have the option of reducing their weekly working hours.

  • Mobile working and home office

    The possibilities of home office and mobile working can also make it easier for employees to reconcile work and family life.

  • Family-friendly meeting times in the committees

    The committees of the university self-administration and the meetings beyond that are to be conducted in a family-friendly manner:

    • The chairpersons of the committees and the deans of the faculties should ensure that the dates of ordinary and extraordinary meetings, discussions and consultations are family-friendly or modify them in such a way that family concerns of the participants are better taken into account.
    • Meeting times should be chosen in such a way that the compatibility of work or studies and family care and/or nursing obligations of the participants is taken into account.
    • Family-friendly scheduling should be flexibly oriented to the needs of the respective committee members, which should be requested before each term of office.
    • The meeting and committee dates as well as the start and end times are to be announced in good time.
  • Leave of absence for family reasons

    Leave of absence for family reasons is possible. Information on this can be obtained from the Human Resources Department.

  • Financial Support For Completing A Doctorate

    If you have to delay the completion of a doctorate due to the difficulty of reconsiling the needs of academic work and family, you can apply for financial support. For further information click here: Promotionsabschlussförderung

Information for students

  • Part-time studies

    At Leibniz Universität Hannover it is possible to study part-time in some degree programmes. The part-time study must be applied for each semester at the Enrolment Office. In a part-time semester, a maximum of half of the credit points specified in the examination regulations may be acquired. Full-time studies must be taken in the semester in which the final thesis is written. For a semester of part-time study, the full semester fee and, if applicable, half of the long-term study fees must be paid. The BAföG entitlement does not apply to part-time studies.   • Leave of absence

    Students may take a leave of absence for a maximum of two consecutive semesters and for a maximum of four semesters in total. Longer leaves of absence are also possible for important reasons or hardship cases. In the case of raising a child, 6 consecutive semesters of leave are permitted. During a semester of leave, students may not perform any services or take any examinations. The payment of BAföG maintenance is suspended for the time of the leave of absence. 

    An application for leave of absence must be submitted to the Enrollment Office each semester at the time of re-registration and must include a copy of the child's birth certificate. You can find the application and further information here:
