2024 - Actions at LUH
This year, “Hannover läuft gegen Gewalt gegen Frauen statt“ will take place for the first time on 25.11.24. LUH is looking forward to employees and students running 5 kilometers together as a sign of solidarity.
Hatred of women and racism online will be the topic of this year's online lecture. On 27.11.24, book author Veronika Kracher will talk about „Gekränkte Männlichkeit, Antifeminismus und Rechtsextremismus - Wie sich junge Männer im Internet radikalisieren” (Offended masculinity, anti-feminism and right-wing extremism - how young men radicalize themselves on the internet).
In cooperation with Hannover University Sports Department, a self-defense course for women will be offered on 30.11.24 to learn the basics of self-defense and how to deal with potentially threatening situations.
On 03.12.24, activist Lisanne Richter from @catcallsofhannover will be giving a workshop on „Catcalls - Belästigung oder Kompliment?“ (Catcalls - harassment or compliments?) and what those affected can do about sexually suggestive shouting, talking or whistling.
What to do in case of violence?
Talk to someone you trust
If you are affected yourself or know someone who has experienced violence, it is important that you talk about it - with someone you trust. This could be a colleague, friend, family member or counselor, such as the Counseling Service of the Equal Opportunities Office.
Write down what you can't say!
If you are simply not (yet) ready to talk about your experiences, you can tell us anonymously using the field below. If it concerns sexual assault in the university context, we will investigate the information and ensure greater safety.
International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women takes place worldwide on November 25 every year. The aim of this day is to raise public awareness of the widespread problem of violence against women and to promote measures to combat it. The color orange symbolizes a future without violence against women.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was chosen as a day of remembrance. November 25 is intended to commemorate the three Mirabal sisters. The politically active women were murdered because of their resistance against the regime in the Dominican Republic. In 1999, the United Nations recognized 25 November as the official International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
This day aims to draw attention to various forms of violence against women. These include physical, sexual and psychological violence. It also aims to strengthen and protect women's rights. One focus is the prevention of violence and support for survivors.
The statistics show: Women are affected by violence significantly more often than men. It can be seen that violence against women is a general social issue. According to the German government, around 71.1% of victims of domestic violence in 2022 were female. Last year, the number of victims of domestic violence rose again and the number of unreported cases of victims of gender-specific violence remains unknown (see Lagebild Häusliche Gewalt, Bundesregierung).
For this reason, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is an important and necessary occasion to draw attention to gender-specific violence against women and to promote gender equality.
